lOyalty and perseverance
Loyalty and perseverance are the main themes of The Odyssey which Odysseus demonstrates over and over again during his ten year voyage to back to Ithaca.
He says,"I fear the goddess prophesied all too well when she told me I should have my full measure of misery on the sea before I reached my native land" (78-79) . This quote is important because it shows that Odysseus knew he would suffer to get home, but he was determined. He also says, "If I try to land, I may be lifted by a roller, dashed against the solid rock-and I'd have had my trouble for nothing" (82). Odysseus was being beaten up by Poseidon in the sea, and this quote shows how much trouble he is in, but he does not give up.
Vengeance is another theme because Poseidon causes many of the disasters that Odysseus faces in order to avenge the blinding of Cyclops, Poseidon's son. Odysseus shows the importance of intelligence over strength when he uses his cunning to defeat powerful enemies, especially when he gets home. He also says " Yes, I myself, home again in my own country in the twentieth year after much suffering "(321). He says this just before he kills the suitors in his home, showing not only his suffering but his intelligence in dealing with big problems all of the twenty years and now at home.
